The Charity Commission defines the essential role of a Charity Trustee through six main duties which include: acting in the charity’s best interests, managing resources responsibly, and exercising reasonable care and skill. To support Trustees in fulfilling these responsibilities, the Charity Commission offers some excellent (and free) sessions specifically designed for faith charities, which we hope Managing Trustees across the Connexion will find helpful.
The Charity Commission is holding new sessions on these issues in June and July 2026.The Key Subject Areas covered in these webinars will be as follows:
- Charity law requirements and trustee legal duties;
- Good governance, including risk management and decision making;
- Best practice and the Charity Commission’s expectations.

This webinar will cover what charity trustee duties are. It will consider:
- What being a trustee means;
- The six main charity trustee duties;
- The role of the Charity Commission, (including when things go wrong);
- Common issues that can arise and how to avoid them;
- Signposting to where you can get further help and guidance.
Taking Care of Your Funds (Faith Charities) – Webinar, Thursday 11 June, 12:00–13:00

This webinar will provide guidance on Taking Care of your Funds for Faith Charities and covers the following:
- Internal financial controls;
- Managing expenses and payments to trustees and conflicts of interest;
- Signposting to where you can get further help and guidance.
Managing Your Faith Charity (In-Person, Birmingham), Tuesday 07 July, 09:30–12:30

This event will provide guidance and best practice aimed at faith charities and their trustees. The day will be a mix of presentations, interactive exercises, networking opportunities and a chance to ask questions.
(This is an in-person event, and cannot be attended remotely)
The event topics include:
- Trustee Duties – your legal responsibilities;
- Decision making and record keeping;
- Conflicts of Interest – what are they and how to manage them;
- Risks, and how to manage them;
- What to do if something goes wrong.
Taking advantage of these free sessions gives Managing Trustees a valuable opportunity to strengthen their understanding of the duties of being a charity trustee and can help build confidence in your role. We would also be keen to hear from you if you attend any of the sessions and find them helpful.
