Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes

Job Title: Legal Officer (Connexional Team)

Role

The position is for a temporary contract (up to 18 months) to be employed by the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes to provide legal support and advice to the Methodist Council in relation to its legal obligations in Charity and Trust Law and its oversight of Methodist connexional property; and as directed also to support the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes in connection with their obligations under The Methodist Church Act 1939 as well as Charity and Trust Law. The successful candidate would ideally have background knowledge of the Methodist Church and its structure.

The primary function of the role will be to respond to enquiries, draft reports, guidance and other documentation, deal appropriately with requests for assistance from the Conference Officer for Legal and Constitutional Practice, manage and advise on a portfolio of cases relating to Connexional property and trust matters, provide legal support and guidance to the Connexional Team (the Methodist Council) and, where directed, the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes, as appropriate.

You will need to have:

  • At least two years post qualification or equivalent experience, ideally with a working knowledge of Charity and Trust Law, and how these relate to property transactions.
  • Experience of residential and commercial property transactions.
  • Experience of implementing legal policies and practices.
  • Effective communication and presentational skills, both verbal and written.
  • The ability to work with board members and committee members.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams and Sharepoint.
  • The ability to work collaboratively over a remote network.

You will also need to be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to colleagues and stakeholders in all parts of the Methodist Church and work effectively as a member of the Legal Team. The applicant need not be a member of the Methodist Church but must be sympathetic to the mission and aims of the Methodist Church. You must also show commitment to the principles of Equal Opportunities and ability to implement them in post.

Due to the short term nature of the contact, training time will be limited: the successful candidate must be able to adapt quickly and follow tasks through with minimal supervision.

Expressions of interest in this role should be sent to the Legal Manager at TMCP, by email to laura.carnall@tmcp.org.uk by no later than 5pm on Monday 8th November 2021. Interviews will take place on 18th and 19th November 2021.
