Job Title: Legal Officer (Connexional Team)

 

Salary: negotiable dependent upon experience

 

Role

 

The position is for a temporary contract (up to 18 months with potential to extend beyond this time frame) to provide solution-focused legal advice to the Methodist Council in respect of its property and trust portfolio ensuring that members of the Council understand their legal obligations under Charity and Trust Law and are advised accordingly.  The role will also involve providing support to the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes in connection with their obligations as custodian trustee for the Methodist Church.

 

The role will provide for flexible working in accordance with TMCP’s policy with the requirement to travel to offices in Manchester and London from time to time. The first three months the post will be mainly based in Manchester for 2-3 days per week for training and induction.

 

The primary functions of the role will be to:

  • respond to enquiries,
  • draft reports, guidance and other documentation,
  • deal appropriately with requests for assistance from the Conference Officer for Legal and Constitutional Practice,
  • act as the interface between the Methodist Council’s appointed solicitors and the Council on Connexional property transactions,
  • think laterally and offer innovative and constructive solutions for the continued and future use of Connexional property and possible improvements to trust arrangements.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least three years post qualification or equivalent experience in a wide range of property related transactions.
  • A working knowledge of Charity and Trust Law, and how these relate to property transactions.
  • Experience of implementing legal policies and practices.
  • Effective communication and presentational skills, both verbal and written.
  • The ability to work with board members and committee members.  
  • Proficiency with MS Office, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams and Sharepoint.
  • The ability to work collaboratively over a remote network.

You will also need to be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to colleagues and stakeholders in all parts of the Methodist Church and work effectively as a member of the Legal Team. The applicant need not be a member of the Methodist Church but must be sympathetic to the mission and aims of the Methodist Church. You must also show commitment to the principles of Equal Opportunities and ability to implement them in post.

 

The successful candidate must be able to adapt quickly to manage a complex workload and follow tasks through with minimal supervision.
