Marking a Moment: TMCP Says Farewell to Central Buildings

“We didn’t realise we needed this until we did it.”

That was the overwhelming response to a special gathering held by TMCP staff and trustees last week, marking a moment of transition as the organisation temporarily moves out of its longstanding home at Central Buildings, Manchester.

The move comes as the building undergoes extensive renovation work. While TMCP hopes to return once the refurbishment is complete, this was a moment to pause, reflect, and say a heartfelt farewell to the space that has housed so many years of faithful service.

Built around the themes of People, Purpose, and Place, the gathering offered time to remember the journey – from first days and milestone moments to team collaborations and quiet daily routines. Some had worked in the building for over forty years, others just a few weeks – but all have played an integral role in the life and mission of TMCP.

The event invited reflection on the purpose that drives the organisation’s work: enabling local churches and managing trustees across the Connexion to steward property, trusts, and resources faithfully and well. It was a moment to celebrate not only what TMCP does, but the way it does it – with care, professionalism, and deep commitment.

Each participant received a custom-designed coaster bearing the words People, Purpose, Place – a simple, thoughtful gift to carry into the new office, and a reminder of the value of shared memory and hopeful beginnings.

“Sometimes it’s easy to keep going without taking stock,” said TMCP’s Vice Chair during the gathering. “But today reminded us that we are part of something deeply rooted. Whatever building we’re in, it’s the people, the purpose, and the shared journey that matter most.

As the gathering closed – with cake, naturally, in true Methodist fashion – the atmosphere was one of quiet gratitude, shared laughter, and deep appreciation.

TMCP’s temporary relocation marks a new chapter in its 160-year history. But before stepping forward, this community took time to look back – to honour the people, the purpose, and the place that have shaped its story so far.
